Liveable Neighbourhood Autumn 2022 Update

Introduction

Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods (LNs) are intended to transform streets into safer, more attractive spaces where everyday needs can be met locally. They are to be accessible and healthy places that allow people of all ages and abilities to play and socialise outdoors in their local area. They will prioritise people travelling actively and by public transport. They are focussed on supporting local businesses.

Dennistoun is in the first tranche of this programme of projects being introduced across Glasgow, blending the 20-minute neighbourhood concept with the place principle to respond to the current environmental, social, health and economic challenges the city faces.

Neighbourhood Infrastructure Improvement Fund

On 7 June 2022, Glasgow City Council (GCC) made the following announcement:

Options for a £23m package of investment in roads, lighting, footways, traffic signals and other vital infrastructure are being put before communities across Glasgow.

The Neighbourhood Infrastructure Improvement Fund will see £1m allocated for improvements in each of the city’s 23 council wards with community representatives having a direct say on how the money will be spent.

Detailed proposals that provide costings and specifications for potential work are being presented to Area Partnership committee for all wards and members of the committee will then help to determine the priorities for their area. Area Partnerships bring together elected members at local level, public and third sector organisations, community councils and other community representatives.

Glasgow's Liveable Neighbourhoods
Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods

A Liveable Neighbourhood supports living, working, commerce and culture within its area; encourages sustainable transport to move around it; and has a distinct character. Liveable Neighbourhoods are also known as 20-minute neighbourhoods, where people can meet their everyday needs within a short walk or cycle.

Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods will be accessible and healthy places that allow people of all ages and abilities, to play and socialise outdoors in their local area, as well as making walking, cycling and public transport the first choice.

Active Travel Strategy 2022-2031 Draft
Active Travel Strategy 2022-2031 Draft

Consultation open until Monday 22nd November 2021 Sunday 5th December 2021.

Glasgow City Council is delivering an Active Travel Strategy, designed to achieve significant modal shift across the city to walking, wheeling and cycling. It is intended to supersede the existing Strategic Plan for Cycling 2016-2025.

The strategy is a recognition of the positive impact that transport, and active travel in particular, can make towards city’s wider policy objectives on Climate and the Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Inclusion and Equality and Wealth and Inclusive Growth. The public conversation in Autumn 2020 directly informed the policies and actions proposed in this draft strategy.
