Our Big Gig in Dennistoun: Saturday 12th July

Our Big Gig Dennistoun

Our Big Gig in Dennistoun will showcase the vibrant and diverse musical talent in the local area as part of the Our Big Gig nationwide music festival. The gig takes place on Saturday 12th July at Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre, 13 Whitevale St, Dennistoun, G31 1QW. BBQ and soundtrack will commence from 6pm, with performances taking place from 7pm until 10pm. Entry is free.

The programme for the evening will include the following artists:

Jethro Kinavuidi: Jethro came to Scotland from the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 2008. Persecuted for his political opinions, it was too dangerous for him and his family to stay. His album Thank You Glasgow raises awareness of the situation there.

Phil O’Malley and Friends: Phil is a jazz trombone player and a graduate of the Masters Degree in Jazz – the first qualification of its kind in Scotland. Phil performs regularly with award-winning ensembles such as the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Ken Mathieson’s Classic Jazz Orchestra, and Salsa Celtica.

Lorraine McCauley: Singer-songwriter Lorraine McCauley’s voice draws you in with its ethereal expressive quality and even at its gentlest the strength in her voice is compelling, easily able to hold its own in the context of the endlessly fascinating and inventive soundscapes her band creates around her songs.

Sarah Hayes: Her crystalline vocals, dextrous instrumental skills and creative melodic approach help define the sound of Glasgow indie-pop favourites Admiral Fallow.

Dennistoun Community Council has been able to host this event due to a recently awarded grant from Superact and Creative Scotland as part of the Glasgow 2014 Culture programme.

We’ll also use the event to consult residents about future opportunities for music-making, including workshops and the creation of a community choir.

In staging this free event, DCC has had great support from local musicians and performers, as well as Glasgow based arts consultancy company Glow Arts.

If you are attending the Big Gig, dropping us a quick email to hello@dennistouncc.org.uk or giving us a shout on facebook or twitter to say so will help in planning for the BBQ and seating. Not essential, though. We look forward to seeing you there!

Update: The event is intended to be child/family friendly and, although licensed, children under 12 are able to remain until 10pm (standard licensing conditions). We would, however, ask that folk are respectful of artists and audience when performances are taking place. BBQ is entirely veggie. The bar is well-stocked and reasonably priced.
